Young Enterprise Fair 1996

From an early age, Johann demonstrated his entreprenerial skills through the small business ventures he created in his schooling years at De La Salle College, Malta.  Inspired by his father Anthony, also an active businessman in the tourism industry, Johann started his first venture at the age of eleven when he started importing computer diskettes into Malta and selling software to other students. The idea came to him during a holiday to England with his parents when he realised that software distribution in Malta was limited and much more expensive than England. Soon enough Johann was distributing his products into other schools and through 4 different shops in Malta who later started to import their own software.

The software business started to loose edge after a couple of years when more competitive practices started in Malta and software became easily available.  Johann diversified into the importation of fashion items especially trendy belt buckles who were very popular among teenagers at the time. Even though this venture was a profitable one from a financial and educational point of view, Johann decided to give it up and focus more on his studies and his passion for playing Golf.

Johann took up the game of Golf at the unusually young age of 8 years, being attracted to the game simply by watching it being played on TV. He was the first golfer in Malta under the age of thirty and he was so keen on this sport that his parents had to drive him to the Golf club at least twice a week during school season and everyday in the Summer.  He quickly became the Royal Malta Golf Club mascot player and in 1990, at the age of 11, having a handicap of 18, he won his first Golfing tournament competing only with adult players in the club. The Golf professional of the club Mr Robert Josey PGA was so interested in Johann's potential that he took him to play in Scotland to get experience in overseas clubs. Mr Josey even signed a recommendation for him to play in the Old course in St Andrews.  By the age of twelve Johann struck his first and only Hole in One and during that year he placed in the top 5 in a few more competitions including 1st place in an under 18 competition in NSW Australia. To his present regret Johann packed in his golf clubs at the age of fourteen to focus on his studies and spend more time with his peers who were not interested in playing golf.

Johann continued his studies in high school specialising in Accounting, Economics, Marketing and Information Technology and he always achieved very high results in all these subjects demonstrating his passion for business studies. In fact he later found all these subjects very useful in his career managing his own business.

At the age of sixteen Johann was appointed Managing Director of the Young enterprise company for his college. This was basically an educational project for business students who were required to form a full fledged company, create a business plan, produce, market and sell a product or service. The company had to operate for one year and then present its financial statements together with sales, management production reports to a board of judges and the company shareholders which had to monitor the company's performance and final results.  Johann came up with the idea to produce ornamental candles in different shapes, sizes and small statues made out of wax.  The company named Wix 'n' Wax, employed 18 students each having a different role in the company's production, marketing or accounting department.  At the end of the year the company won first place in a number of achievements including highest profitablility and best managed enterprise, and a second overall rating from the 32 companies established in Malta.  The company also ranked 3rd overall in the Young Enterprise Europe competition which was a contest between almost 200 young enterprise companies throughout Europe.

In senior high school Johann was also elected president of the student council by his fellow students and was the main organiser for the students' social, eductional and sporting events. During this time, together with a couple of partners, he also ventured into the bar and entertainment business, by hiring out bars for one evening a week and promoting them amongst a targeted group of customers and university students.

Johann left school at the age of eighteen and although he had graduated to attend the University of Malta and offered a scholarship to attend the University of Swansea faculty of Business & economics, he preffered to remain in Malta and start his working career and continue his studies part time by taking a Marketing Diploma course which he completed in three years.

By the age of nineteen Johann had partnered in his father's car hire buisiness which at the time was still a very small, family run concern operating a fleet of no more than ten cars. His father was more focused on other businesses he was developing and the car rental had become a sideline, which Johann took over the and converted into one of today's leading car hire firms in Malta. Ten years later Johann took full controlling interest of the company and is now operating an average fleet of 150 cars and 12 full time employees, leading the way in the online car rental industry for Malta.

Swansea was established as a limited liability company in 1989 by Johann's father, Anthony (aka Tony), who had been in the car rental and taxi business since 1969.  Swansea's core business was the provision of taxi service and self drive car hire for holidaymakers, however Swansea was also an international funeral direction company, a business derived from the Camilleri's background. The Camilleri family was one of the longest established funeral companies in Malta and the only one specialising in international repatriation for when a holidaymaker dies in Malta.

In 1998, Johann partnered with his father by investing in Swansea Enterprises Limited. By then the company was more focused on the international repatriation business and the provision of travel assistance services. The car hire service was only operational on a very small scale and needed full re-structuring.

Johann took up the challenge to modernise the fleet and operation of Swansea car hire and within a couple of years the company had expanded its fleet and client base enormously.  Swansea became the first local car hire company marketing its services online, helping it to double its operation year after year and soon competing with the internationally renowned brands.

Like any business the start was always difficult and for the first few years the company only employed minimal staff. On several occassions Johann had to work 18 hour days, wash cars and rent them out in between taxi runs. He had no assistance with the office administration, accounts and marketing and had to handle everything himself working 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Looking back, Johann has no regrets on the first 5 years of his operation to which he dedicated his young adult years. Thanks to his hard work, dedication and effort, he now only plays a managerial role in the car rental business, even though at times you can still find him dealing with customers himself, since his main concern is to keep the client happy even if it means having to wash a car himself for it to be delivered on time.

Johann admits he was blessed with the background and experience provided by his father and also with the dedication and loyalty shown by some of the people he employed. In particular, he points out that he may have not been able to bring out the full potential of Swansea without the help and dedication of Charmaine Galea. Ms Galea was employed with the company in 2004 as a secretary / operations executive and is now the General Manager on the car hire business.  Thanks to Miss Galea's loyalty, effort and hard work, Johann managed to concentrate more on streamlining and marketing the business, finding new opportunities and ways to develop further, without having to worry about the day-to-day running of the business.

Since 2004, Swansea expanded with large steps and took on great ventures and contracts. Amongst other conferences and incentives, the company handled all the transportation for a conference of 800 notaries, the conference and incentives for the publishing staff of Playboy Corporation and the transportation services for the government of Kenya during the Commonwealth Head of States meeting which took place in Malta in 2005. It was appointed as the main Malta car rental supplier for Easycar (past of easygroup) Rentalcargroup, economycarrentals.com and Golden Tuplip Hotels amongst others.

More recently in 2007, Johann's present wife Maria Sandu (now Camilleri) joined the company starting out as a sales representative.  Maria contributed immensely to improving the business' customer relations and was soon promoted to assistant manager and head of customer services.  She now assists Charmaine to manage most of the day to day running of the car rental operation, while Johann concentrates on expanding Swansea into other ventures mainly the funeral and repatriation business and into the propert market.

In 2007, Johann bought out his uncle from the family's funeral business in Gzira and took over the shop which once belonged to his grandfather and later passed on to his own father. Ironically Johann's father had sold the shop to his brother twenty five years earlier so he had to buy it back for ten times the price.

In 2008, Swansea had grown too large to manage its various operations efficiently and up to the standard required by Johann, so it was decided that the company needed to seperate its operations into 4 fields:

Active Car Rental became Swansea's trading name for its short term and holiday car rental operation. Swansea Chauffeur Drive handled ground transportation, airport transfers, tours and cab services while Camilleri Funeral Directors took over and specialised in the funeral business. The main company Swansea Enterprises specialised in the organisation of travel assistance operations such air ambulance repatriations, stretcher cases, inpatient hospitalisation, private medical visits, airline tickets and hotel accommodation for nurse escorts, patients, relatives etc...

In early 2009, during a visit to Australia, the family received the bad news that Tony was diagnosed with Myeloma and Johann was handed over the task to continue the family's funeral and repatriation business on his own. For twelve months Johann had to cope with all aspects of the business as well as co-ordinating his own wedding. To everyone's relieve, in October, Tony's condition improved greatly and he returned to work on a semi-active role which was anyway a much needed contribution to the company's funeral operation.

In 2006, Johann started looking beyond Malta's borders and wanted to diversify into new sectors, mainly in the property market. After experiencing a very sharp increase in property prices with Malta's accession into the EU, he figured that opportunities in the property market where still available in countries which where still to join, such as Romania and Bulgaria. After a lot of research and wanting to offer something different, he chose Romania since the alternative was already heavily explored by other Maltese investors. Taking on his brother and long time friend James Gauci Borda, as partners in this new venture, he formed a new company in Romania and invested in very promising property in the region of Brasov, Transylvania. To promote the venture Johann even wrote an article about Romania, its economy and future potential on the main Maltese newspaper The Times of Malta. This venture is seen as a long term investment, since the partners feel that there is a lot of potential for their property just as soon as the world economy emerges from the recession and Romania joins the single currency in 2012.

Two years later, in early 2009, after the start of the recession and during a holiday trip to Spain, Johann noticed that the property prices in Spain where at an all time low and saw potential in that market as well. He soon bought a holiday home on the Costa Blanca which he repays by letting it out to holidaymakers for their vacations in the sun. This was an entirely new venture and although business is very slowl at the moment because of the weak sterling pound and economic crises, he sees great potential for the future.

Personal & Social Life
Wedding Brasov - July 2009
On a more personal level, perhaps one of the things Johann keeps closely to heart is the relationship he has with his childhood friends and ex-school mates. No matter how busy his working life may be, he always makes time to meet up with a group of his school friends with whom he has been in close contact for the last 15 years. The group is like a second family to him and the close bond they share is mutual since they are always there for each other in good times and in bad.

Johann was introduced to Maria Magdalena Sandu during a visit to Romania, in June 2006, by the girlfriend of his business partner and childhood friend, James. Soon enough they fell in love and she moved to Malta later in that year. Apart from having to leave her immediate family in Romania, Maria found no difficulty with settling in Malta. Her sense of humour, charm and personality which had attracted him on the day they met, was quickly welcomed by his family and friends and she became like a sister to his group of friends and a new daughter to his parents.

On the 4th of July 2009, after a 2 year long engagement, Johann married Maria in Brasov, Romania. The wedding was a relatively small event with no more than 70 guests, for which his parents and all his friends flew out from Malta to attend. The ceremony was traditionally Orthodox being a very original occassion for the Maltese guests and celebrated in the Romanian and English language. The reception was held in Poiana Brasov, Romania's premiere holiday mountain and ski resort.

The newly weds now live in their new house in Johann's old neighbourhood Naxxar for most of the year, since they visit their house in Spain and family in Romania often throughout each year. The couple share a very happy life at home and work and they intend to start a family of their own in the hopefully immediate future.
